24/7 job interview - JOBIZ
The JOBIZ is a new invention I came up with. It's a concept that comes from "job" + "biz."
Basically, it's a job designed so that it could become a business in itself. Both the employer and the employee win, because the former can slowly but surely outsource the function to an autonomous free agent, whereas the latter can learn more about business and totally gain control / ownership of the function.
I predict that the concept of a JOBIZ will spread rapidly in the new global economy. Employing organizations will become platforms for creating such jobs because they have the stability and resources, while the jobiz holder has the entrepreneurial spirit and drive.
This means business owners will always be looking for entrepreneurially driven people, and this in turn means that the "job interview" will take place 24 hours a day.
Concretely, it means that anything you say or do or show, will contribute to shaping a certain perception in the mind of an employer or an employer's agent (HR rep, headhunter, etc.).
Sure, you have the right to remain silent. However, if you do decide to speak up or write stuff (for instance, on Linkedin Answers) that reveals your mind, your values, your standards, your professionalism, etc. then anything you say can and will be used against you (or for you).
What about jobs that will never become a JOBIZ? Staff positions, for instance. I'm afraid those are the dead-end jobs. Because they are not business-relevant, they will eventually be automated, outsourced or eliminated altogether.
By "business-relevant," I mean marketing, sales, production, or any function that contributes directly to a company's success and profitably growth.
This being said, I believe most jobs -- even the most bureaucratic ones -- can be turned into one that contributes significantly to the company's growth and success. It's just a matter of understanding how your company works to create value for customers.
