The World is Flat. Be well-rounded and well surrounded.

Thomas Friedman's best-seller The World is Flat should be a wake-up call to anyone who cares about their economic survival in the new economy.

More than two million copies have already been sold.

This means at least two million people know something you don't.

Two million people are ahead of you in the game. The new global economic game where the stakes are very high. You could lose your job, you could lose your self-esteem, you could lose a lot.

If you've read the book, you're most likely very concerned about your future. You might even be panicking a bit.

If you haven't read the book, you are in a worse situation since you may not be aware of what is really going on in the new economy.

Here's my take:

In a world where our jobs are moving to Asia, our minds must move to the future.

In other words, we must imagine the future. We must create the future.

We must think that NOTHING is impossible to us. We must think that we can do ANYTHING we set our minds to.

Managers, executives and bosses at all levels of the organization must become "human potential unleashers." They must liberate people from their limiting beliefs and unleash their innate potential.

Anything short of that and China and India will beat us in the global economy.

The success secret here is twofold:
  1. Be well-rounded
  2. Be well surrounded

Be well-rounded by learning skills OUTSIDE your field. If you're an engineer, learn public speaking or marketing. If you're in marketing, learn project management. If you're a project manager, learn finance.

Be well surrounded by networking with people who have something to teach you. Network only with the best, with people who excel in their field. These people, not surprisingly, are usually well connected.
